7 Volcanes is a Great Place to Stay in San Marcos La Laguna on Lake Atitlan

Whether this is your first trip to Guatemala, or your fifteenth, the apartments at 7 Volcanes or Casa Tula are quiet and secure places to stay, a five minute walk to the town’s shops and activities, but insulated from the noise and activity when you want the privacy and rest.

Lake Atitlan

Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Atitlan was formed some 85,000 years ago as a result of volcanic activity. This 80 square mile lake is as much as 340 meters deep. And Guatemala, generally known to be the “Land of Eternal Spring” puts forth its best exemplary climate here at the lake which averages around 72 degrees year round.

San Marcos is one of 12 indigenous villages, inhabited by predominantly Kakchiquel and Tzutujil Maya, that surround the lake.  San Marcos has one of the best views of the lake because it has view of the volcanos as well. Here’s a shot of San Marcos and the lake that I took on one of my hikes, maybe a twenty minute walk from 7 Volcanes.

San Marcos La Laguna

Visits to San Marcos have changed the lives of many people that I know. A lot of people come for a few days and have stayed for weeks. Others have come for weeks and stayed months. And me? I’ve been here for almost 25 years. Many people return again and again. One reason for this is the local people. There’s a friendliness and acceptance that pervades this town that is very easily perceived but not easily forgotten. Life happens more simply and fluidly. It’s a wonderful chance to reorder your priorities and reassess your goals. You’ll feel welcome here.

Getting Here

I’ve had guests that have arrived on motorcycle from Germany, but by far, most people will arrive at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. San Marcos is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from the capital. I have a service that will pick you up at the airport and bring you directly to San Marcos. There are also public shuttles that come from Antigua and other parts of the country. If your flight arrives in the evening, it is recommended to spend the night in the city, or in Antigua Guatemala, where there are many fine hotels that I can recommend. For people who arrive by car, I have a secure parking area which is close to Casa Tula and the apartments. Casa Tula and the apartments are about a 4 minute walk from the parking area and car access.
