My Story

I first traveled to Guatemala and Lake Atitlan in 1993, and bought my first piece of land in San Marcos La Laguna in 1995. My wife Carolina was in the Peace Corp here in Guatemala in the 70’s, and it was her love of the land and the people that brought me here. Since then I have added another 14 or 15 pieces to have a total of around 5 acres. I started my first house in 1996 and built for 20 years, finishing with Casa Tula a couple of years ago. I built my last home in North Carolina and worked for twenty years there as a cabinetmaker. I have been able to use my fine woodworking skills on my buildings and furniture here, as well as pass them on to some of my local friends and family members.

When Carolina lost her battle with cancer in the fall of 2000, there was no doubt in my mind that I would stay in Guatemala. My experiences working with the local masons and laborers formed a bond of friendship that has continued and grown. I now have a family, with a grandchild here.

I’ve also used my time here to develop my life long love of the guitar. I’ve been able to do concerts in various parts of the United States, as well as Spain and the U.K., from contacts that I’ve made from performing here locally for visitors. I enjoy sharing my passion for the blues, as well as my love for the Guatemalan people with my guests and the people I meet here.
